Oil penalty to India aggressive leveraging to Russia: US Vice-President Vance

The US Vice President JD Vance has indicated that such a move by the Trump administration of imposing a 25% percent tariff penalty on India due to its purchase of Russian oil is a move of aggressive economic pressure to compel Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine. This has not gone well with India which contends that its energy sourcing activities are guided by national interest and market forces.

Key Points:

Tariff Penalty

Trump administration has placed a total tariff of 50 percent of Indian goods of which 25 percent of tariff penalty was specifically made on Indian products that concern the procurement of Russian crude oil by India.

Indian reaction

The response of India, which was the largest importer of Russian crude oil, was leveled by the external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, and he called the tariff unjustified and unfair and quipped why not identical arguments be used to target the biggest buyer of the Russian crude oil, China.

The US Goal

Vance claims that the goal is to make it more difficult so that Russia cannot profit in the oil economy consequently forcing them to cease the war in Ukraine.

Potential Impact

This might worsen the relations between India and the US officials, especially after Trump had doubled Tariffs on Indian products.

India-Russia Relations

Due to the pressure exerted by the US on India, both countries have decided to deepen bilateral trade relations and Russian President, Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India later this year.

Reactions:

JD Vance

He was confident that the US could broker the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war, because both parties had made considerable concessions in the last few weeks.

S Jaishankar

Asked why the US is criticising it, since Europe and America also purchase oil in India, and it was not explicit why India was being singled out when it comes to purchasing oil in Russia.
